‘Land, Sea and Sky’ is the title of an exhibition by John Connolly at the St John Street Gallery & Café from 11-31 October. A variety of his work will be on display including Landscapes, Seascapes, Moorland and Woodland paintings.
John works mainly with acrylics, but sometimes mixed media using anything and everything that is permanent, to achieve the desired effect. He uses a variety of found materials, making marks and interesting textures with anything at hand. Scratching, scraping and sometimes flicking the paint onto the canvas creates runs and dribbles that suggest waves or interesting cloud formations. Beach sand may be used to create an interesting texture in a landscape or to represent itself within a seascape. Dried grass, twigs, leaves and ferns have also been known to appear in John’s landscape paintings.
This current body of work draws inspiration from the ever-changing light and colours throughout the seasons. Whether it be over the sea, moors, rivers or ancient woodlands, John always creates work full of colour, texture, drama and emotion allowing the ‘observer’ to experience a feeling of remoteness and ‘sense of place.’
The Gallery opens from Tues to Sun 9:30-5:00.

The St John Street Gallery & Café is exhibiting the work of well-known British Contemporary Artists during September & October. On display will be limited edition prints of Barbara Rae CBE RA, Patrick Hughes, John Piper, Simon Palmer, Donald Hamilton Fraser and Storm Thorgerson.
Two special features of the exhibition is a display of the full set of prints of the Appropriated Alphabets by Sir Peter Blake, as well as a special collection by Bruce McLean that will be on display from the 24th of September. Bruce’s bold and confident approach to print making and the wit evident there-in proved influential to his contemporaries as well as a generation of younger artists.
Known as the “Godfather of British Pop Art”, Sir Peter Blake has applied commercial lettering in his work since the 1950’s. His “Appropriated Alphabets” is a portfolio of twelve Alphabets demonstrating his interest in and creative application of typography.
